The Challenge: Tani vs Eric (Week 1)

Sorry for the delay, it has been a hectic week here amidst our little battle. Our first week of The Challenge was completed on Monday and this is our first weekly update.  I have to admit I was nervous as hell going into this. I am very impulsive and could not imagine what it would take for me to reject the many urges I cave to on a daily basis. Beer being my favorite and most formidable craving. All in all it has not been bad, less a few restless nights of sleep and a couple of cranky moments.

Tani on the other hand I feel hit this thing without missing a beat. Partially because she has done this before but primarily she is just solid as a rock and focused. Don't get in Tani's way when she is focused. I know I won't although I may secretly start slipping extra salt (for water retention) and butter (for calories) into her food.  She is kicking ass.

We have both stuck to the plan and frankly, its been fun doing this together. Even though showing self restraint and staring at a fridge every night full of IPAs and a couple shelves full of beautiful single malts is total *&^%%&* torture.

Overall Tani feels energized, fit and ready for more. Not to mention 4.5 pounds lighter in the first week. I on the other hand have been feeling like crap because I have been sick and have not exercised since Saturday so I can't give a real sense of how I feel. Although weight loss is not my primary goal, I am down 3 pounds and overall would say optimistic that once this cold is gone, I too will feel energized.

Below is the log we have kept for the first week. It details our exercise as well as food, fluid and other consumption (if any) and our individual comments or thoughts each day. Hope you enjoy our little competition.

Ended 2011 with yoga and started the  new year with yoga.  Feeling good and refreshed.
I felt surprisingly good all day. Never hungry and actually felt like I was always eating. Became a little anxious about the evening knowing there was no beer. Hoping I sleep well tonight but anxious about that too.

I had an intense bootcamp session today.  I’m not sure I have ever worked as hard as I did today.  Down a pound and feeling great.
The sleep I was worried about last night barely came. Felt like I was tossing all night. Hopefully that will improve. Today was easier but still need to focus to remember snacks. I keep having cravings for the goodies I typically snack on like gummi bears but have not had any.

The number on the scale went down some more.  Yes, I weigh myself every day.  Always have, always will.  It motivates me.....  Trying to eat around Isla’s schedule and finding the time for my snacks has definitely been a challenge.  Otherwise, feeling good.
Had a great night sleep last night and was still beat this morning. I will chalk it up to this cold for now. Still fighting urges today but held strong. My stomach is definitely a little unsettled. Lots of gas. Maybe the constant flow of veggies. I have always eaten vegetables but not consistently throughout the day. I do think I will need to increase my calories to make it through my long runs on the weekends.

Isla didn’t eat much yesterday so when she requested dumplings for lunch from our favorite Japanese restaurant I had to give in.  I ordered my teriyaki beef with no sauce, but it came out with sauce.  I couldn’t ask the kitchen for a new dish because I could not afford to wait...Isla was almost done with her meal.  I definitely did not feel as good after this meal as I’ve been feeling after my other meals.  Definitely starting to get sick.
Slept lousy again last night. I am officially getting cranky. Tomorrow will be first long run on this program and I will not be able to get much sleep due to a busy schedule. This is going to get interesting. I could go for a couple of beers right now.

Woke up exhausted after 6 hours of sleep and had a headache all day.  Broke down and took 3 advil in the afternoon.  
Today was crazy. First long run on this program was ok but on 2 occasions I felt my energy completely vacate my body. I tried to get by with only water but I had to eat a gel at around mile 8 and 15 just to maintain. I kept to the program the rest of the day and by evening I was completely out of it.  Exhausted and light headed, getting dizzy every time I stood up. To add a little more flavor I did start the day in the hole. Because of a tight very tight schedule I was limited to only 3.5 hours sleep before getting up at 4:30 am to run and I have a cold so this likely contributed.  That being said I added a 2 ounces of meat and a 1/2 sweet potato to tonights dinner and I feel ok right now.  I am going to continue the program through tomorrow and see how I feel. If it drains me again I will increase my calorie intake going forward on the weekends to satisfy my body for the longer weekend run. Still no beer though:) :(

Exhausted by the time 5:00 rolled around.  Up with Isla at 5:30 and a hard workout today.  Never really hungry, but starting to crave EVERYTHING I can’t have.
My cold was in full swing this morning so I decided to skip my run and sleep.  After breakfast I was feeling better and am hopeful I am past the worst of it. I have been wondering if some of my lack of energy has been due to the cold not just the program.  
There is no question I need to increase my calorie intake and I will do that but only slightly. I am really not trying to lose weight, I want to see if there is a balance here where I can feel great and train hard. Anxiety and crankiness are better.

Did not feel well when I woke up, so I decided not to go to the gym.  I started feeling better at around 10:00, so I thought I would try to go to the gym in the afternoon.  That didn’t work because Isla napped for 3 hours.  Totally craving pizza today.
Glad it was a rest day because the cold I thought was going away was in full swing today. Not much else to say as I just went along with the routine today without much care as I had a hard day of work and this crappy cold. Hopefully better tomorrow and I can focus on the fact that I am not eating or drinking what I want.
