Badwater Acceptance

Last night on the way home from a friend's house with my family we received the following email:

Hello Eric!
Congratulations! You have been accepted to compete in the 2012 Badwater Ultramarathon, presented by AdventureCORPS, Inc. You are part of a select group who will participate in what is recognized across the globe as "the world's toughest footrace."

Well Holy Shit! I am excited beyond description and feel so very fortunate to have been invited to participate in such a truly special event. My entire household is riding high and we will have much to share with you as we work our way towards July 16th.

We still have a long way to go, lots of training and a serious fundraising campaign this year for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation but I must thank all my my friends and family for their support to this point. This has been a goal of mine for quite some time and I look forward to the journey. A particular note of gratitude to Tony Portera for his encouragement and trust as I was his crew chief the past two years. We will be sharing the road as runners this time.

Most of all and I am sure obvious to anyone who actually reads this blog, the biggest thank you goes to my wife and crew chief Tani. She has made great sacrifices to allow me to realize one of my dreams.  I can only hope I have and will continue to do the same for her.

  1. Wow! I'm truly touched by the shout-out, although after the encouragement and did all the work.

Congratulations on earning this great opportunity. I've had the pleasure of watching you grow as a runner and human being, and am honored to have been able to share many adventures with you. This will be another.

The great news rare is it to have two Badwater entrants living within 10 minutes of each other on the East Coast? Could make for some great training if you are ever up for it.

Congratulations again on a job well done.

  2. That's great! And that's horrible. I am equally happy and sad for you - It's going to hurt! [But it's the hurt we both crave.]

  3. Hi,

Awesome news thanx for what you do. I myself have mm but mine is "smoldering" I am constantly seariching for news about treatments & trials cuz I just dont accept the "wait & watch" policy of the medical community.

    1. To My Anonymous Friend, You are the reason I am doing this. Keep fighting! I along with many others are inspired by your strength and are not going to give up until we can celebrate a cure together. Peace E

  4. Congratulations on being accepted to run Badwater Eric. Ive spoke to Tony Portera and he tells me you might be looking for crew members? i don't have much experience with ultras yet but would love to get the chance to help another runner in this great event and hopefully one day in the future get a chance to participate in the race itself.

    1. Thanks George! It looks like my crew may be set but I should know for sure in the next week or so. Email me at so I have your contact info and I will keep you posted. Peace E
