The Challenge: Tani vs Eric; and the Winner is....

So here it is. After 4 weeks the final results are below. Tani has taken the crown of "Biggest Loser" in our household.  She bested me in every category by percentage except for biceps. So not only did I get my butt kicked, my gun show is now nothing more than a side show.

What did we learn?

Keeping a food and exercise journal certainly keeps you honest!  I've learned that I NEED this journal to keep me focused and on track.  As I said earlier in the month, seeing results motivates me.  Hopefully we will be able to continue living this life style (maybe indulge on the weekends) and I can maintain my weight or even trim down some more.  Overall, I feel lean and fit and closer to finishing my first half marathon!

I learned that as much as I preach moderation, excess is possibly my greatest weakness. Or strength! Still not sure, but what I am sure of is I am all in or all out. "Go big or go home", "Ride it like you stole it" and "Live it like it's your last" are sayings that come to mind. I simply enjoy all of the things I love in my life way too much to moderate them. Family, sport, food and beverage........Perhaps if I indulge in all of them excessively they will even out to perfection:)

I was going to suggest you guess who wrote which paragraph above and then Tani reminded me that I have already run a half marathon:) Go Tani.....

TO BEer OR NOT TO BEer?

"Put some windex on it!"
Have you seen My Big Fat Greek Wedding? In it a wise man named Gus uses Windex to cure all ailments from cuts to pimples. Just spray a little Windex on the affected area, and it will be gone. It has been suggested by many (including me) that alcohol may have similar abilities. Could alcohol be my Windex?

Have a cold? How about a little scotch!

Sore or in pain? Perhaps a nice IPA will help relax you!

In this recent article in Runner's World I read about a little experiment to determine if alcohol enhances or depreciates a runners performance. As one of our most favored post race beverages, is it possible that beer is our steroid? Does beer make us faster?

After reading this article I am still not sure but it sure tastes damn good.

EricG's Running Tips #30 It's Too Cold To Run Outside

If it's raining, snowing or just plain freezing out people always ask me if I run outside in this weather. Uhhhhh, YEAH! Its not that I always like running when it's nasty out. I do hit the dreadmill on occasion. There are a couple of reasons I do get out on the road or trails in the most imperfect conditions.
    Gotta Love Beardcicles!
  1. It's important to be prepared for anything on race day. It would be nice if we had 50 and sunny every time but that's just not the way it works. I along with many of you have shown up on race day when perfect weather has turned nasty, from 100 degree temperatures to 33 degrees and raining sideways. It will be much easier to deal with it mentally if you have been there before and have the proper gear.
  2. I have had some of my most epic runs in rough weather. These include planned runs during the year's first snow to getting caught by surprise in nasty thunder storms. Sometimes it's worth taking the chance just to create a great memory.
  3. I actually find that running in adverse condition, cold, heat, snow and rain builds confidence. If I can run in this stuff, I can run in anything.
So don't fear a little precipitation, chill in the air or shoe melting heat.  Prepare properly, adjust your run accordingly, wear the right gear and you will surely build lasting memories and confidence for race day.

Peace.

The Challenge: Tani vs Eric (Week 3)

Three weeks down and just one week to go and it appears we are neck and neck. Tani continues to roll along smoothly and says she feels like she is in the best shape of her life. Although she always looks good I can see how lean Tani has gotten over the last few weeks.  A very obvious change which Tani attributes to the luxury of having the time, being a stay at home mom. I attribute it to her commitment and hard work.

I feel like I am finally in stride having settled on the various tweaks I have made to make this program work for me.  No longer being sick has also made a huge difference in my mood, and overall feeling about this program.

Looking forward to sharing all of our final stats next week.  Here is a little sneak peak. Tani has got me by a pound or more at this point as I have stayed steady on last weeks numbers. We did not take measurements but I feel like Tani has continued her disappearing act while I am unsure, although all of my pants are loose.

This weeks log is below.

Peace

Very happy with the number on the scale!  This is where I was 3 yrs ago.  I’m wondering how much more I will be able to lose and whether or not I will be able to maintain the weight once I go back to my red wine!
Really hoping I can kick this cold/flu this week. I am starting to get way behind on training not to mention I simply miss running and the gym.

Not feeling so great today, but I never feel great when I don’t work out.  Monday is technically not a rest day for me, but I couldn’t get to the gym :(
I am feeling great now. I feel like I have the program dialed in a little better. Just adding the slice of cheese in the morning a couple more ounces of meat here and there and yes couple of beers too seems to make all the difference.
